MBA success stories: Sainath Adelli, Corvinus University of Budapest

Originally from India, Sainath Adelli chose to study at Corvinus University in Budapest, drawn by the expanding market in Central Europe. His MBA has helped him broaden his perspective and enhance his people management skills. Today, he works as the customer experience lead at ExxonMobil

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your career to date?
I graduated as the top student in my department with a bachelor's degree from the University of Bangalore, gaining practical experience through internships at a start-up, a manufacturing firm and a government-owned airline.

I began my career as a senior research analyst at Inkwood Research and later worked as a management consulting analyst at Axience, contributing to strategic projects. During my MBA, I was a research assistant at Corvinus University and served as head of marketing and strategy for a Netherlands-based start-up. At ExxonMobil, I initially interned in commercial operations and now work as the customer experience lead for the commercial business.

What does your current role involve?
At ExxonMobil I oversee cross-functional teams of managed service providers. I am responsible for managing customer experience operations for Canada, overseeing more than 120 accounts.

Why did you want to study for an MBA and why did you choose this particular school?

Growing up in a family involved in small businesses in Mumbai sparked my early interest in understanding the world of commerce. After completing my bachelor’s degree, I was motivated by my professor to pursue higher education abroad.

I completed my MBA at Corvinus University in 2023. Situated in the heart of Budapest along the banks of the Danube, Corvinus offers an exceptional setting with breathtaking views. During my time there, I greatly appreciated the university's vibrant multicultural environment, as well as the diverse, inspiring perspectives shared in the classroom.

Although I received offers from multiple universities, I chose Corvinus for its strong reputation and the full-ride scholarship it offered. Additionally, Budapest’s prime location in Central Europe and its dynamic, evolving market made it an appealing choice, offering ample opportunities for growth and exploration.

What is the most interesting thing you learnt from your MBA?
One of the most valuable lessons was the importance of accepting my own flaws and considering different perspectives. Previously, I often had a one-sided view, but studying alongside classmates from four different continents broadened my mindset. This experience greatly enhanced my collaboration and people management skills, which are crucial for leading teams across the globe.

What were some of the challenges you faced when studying?

The greatest challenge was being away from my family for two years, unable to see them. Additionally, managing my finances proved difficult, as I am the primary economic support for my family.

How has the MBA made a difference to your career path and leadership journey?
The programme has been instrumental in providing the clarity I now have regarding my career goals. It helped me uncover my passion for people management and equipped me with the skills needed to advance my leadership abilities in the corporate world.

In what ways have you taken what you have learnt in your MBA into the organisation you work for?

The first lesson I applied was the importance of inclusion and diversity, valuing different perspectives. I also embraced the principles of persistence and excellence. My MBA experience has made me both more competitive and collaborative –these skills have proven essential in my current role.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying for an MBA?

Having a true passion for learning about business, along with gaining relevant experience before pursuing your MBA, is crucial. Persistence in leadership is equally important, as MBA programmes are meant to develop strong leadership capabilities.

However, the most important piece of advice I can offer is to have a clear understanding of your motivations for pursuing an MBA and the goals you hope to achieve afterwards. Stay committed to your objectives and leadership opportunities will naturally present themselves.

What are the next steps for you on your career journey?

I remain enthusiastic about learning and may pursue a PhD in sustainable business in the future. In the short term, I aim to take on a managerial role, with the long-term goal of becoming a global manager for a large multinational company within a decade. Ultimately, my ambition is to become the CEO of a major corporation like ExxonMobil.
