MBA success stories: Daniela Gomez Garcia, Polimi Graduate School of Management

Originally from Mexico, Daniela Gomez Garcia has also lived in Canada and the US, bringing a diverse perspective to her current role in Milan, Italy. In her position at DHL Supply Chain, she helps implement and deliver initiatives that foster inclusive work environments; her recent MBA from Polimi Graduate School of Management has deepened her understanding of the intersection between social justice and economic growth

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your career to date?

I’m from Xalapa, Veracruz in Mexico (pictured above). I have a bachelor’s degree in communications from Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla and have been very fortunate to live in Canada and the US – as well as, of course, my beloved Mexico. I have worked in various HR roles at global companies for the last seven years and currently live in Milan.

What does your current role involve?

As part of the global diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging team at DHL Supply Chain, we create and implement DEIB strategies aligned with the company’s mission and business goals. We design and deliver training on DEIB topics such as unconscious bias and inclusive leadership to equip colleagues and executives with the skills and knowledge to foster an inclusive environment. We analyse metrics and employee feedback to measure the effectiveness of our initiatives, while ensuring they are culturally sensitive and adaptable to the various regions where the company operates.

Why did you want to study for an MBA in the first instance and why did you choose to get your qualification at this particular school?

I felt I was missing the administration and economics background necessary to continue growing my career. I chose Polimi for its focus on innovation, sustainability and leadership with purpose, which aligned with my goal of driving positive social impact through ethical business strategies. I believe private companies play a key role in building a fairer world and this MBA equips me to contribute more effectively.

What is the most interesting thing you learnt from your MBA?

The deep connection between social justice and economic growth. How integrating a humanistic approach in business decisions fosters a more equitable society and drives sustainable development. By investing in ethical practices and community engagement, businesses can create value that benefits them and the communities they operate in. This perspective reshaped my understanding of how private companies can be agents of positive change, balancing profitability with social responsibility.

What were some of the challenges you faced when studying for an MBA?

Balancing the academic complexity with my immigration process in Italy was very stressful during the first year. Learning Italian while searching for a job and managing my studies added to the pressure. These experiences made me more aware of my own privilege and grew my empathy for immigrants who adapt to a new country while keeping their identity. This process enriched my understanding of the challenges diverse individuals face, inspiring my commitment to social justice and inclusive business practices.

How has the MBA made a difference to your career path and leadership journey?

It transformed them by introducing me to a new way of doing business that I hadn't experienced before. It taught me that it’s possible to put local communities at the centre and not as tools to benefit from. This perspective enabled me to seek out and align with companies that prioritise creating environments where everyone feels they belong and are committed to generating positive impact.

In what ways have you taken what you have learnt in your MBA into the organisation you work for?

By supporting a human-centred approach to business, advocating for inclusive and ethical practices and ensuring that all employees feel valued and respected. I've been able to work on programmes that foster a more inclusive workplace culture, highlighting the importance of social justice.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying for an MBA?

Embrace it with an open mind and heart, connect with your higher purpose and look for a programme that prioritises what matters to you and aligns with your values. There is no perfect time to do what you already know you want to do, go for it.

What are the next steps for you on your career journey?

Continuing to grow and advancing to a position where I can make impactful business decisions that contribute to social justice and building a more sustainable world. I aim to take on leadership roles, always within organisations that prioritise inclusion, ethical practices and social responsibility.
